Steam Turbine Generator Order for Coal-fired Thermal Power Plant in Vietnam

Toshiba Corporation, with Sojitz Corporation has jointly secured an order from state-owned construction company LILAMA Corporation (based in Hanoi) to provide steam turbine generators for use at the coal-fired Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant. LILAMA Corporation is also the appointed Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor of the Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant, located in Ha-Tinh Province, north of Vietnam. The order was made for two 600MW (600,000 kW) class steam turbine generators at approximately 11 billion yen. While the high technology and reliability of our equipment resulted in well-recognized delivery records to the United States and other countries, the order of steam turbine generators for a thermal power plant in Vietnam is a first. The turbine generators are scheduled to be delivered in stages by November 2011 in order for the power plant to begin operations from 2012.
Vietnam is currently experiencing high economic growth rate and thus has plans to increase power generation facilities to 30,000 MW by 2015. In view of the consumption of domestically-produced coal, more than half of the planned power plants will be coal fired, while there are plans by the government to increase the ratio of coal-fired plants threefold to about 45% of total power generation by 2015. Hereafter in future, the construction of many power generation facilities will be based on the 600MW class, and Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant is attracting attention as the first project.
