-Toshiba Singapore Pte Ltd and Toshiba Asia Pacific Pte Ltd reaffirmed their commitment to the sustainability of the environment by announcing new electronics recycling initiatives for both notebook PCs and multi function products (MFP). The core objective is to minimize the environmental impact of its products with a nationwide recycling program.

At this year's NEA's Recycling Day, Toshiba Group will form part of the active participants who will demonstrate its dedication to environmental conservation through these 3 recycling programs:
- Notebook-2-Recycle
- Notebook Battery-2-Recycle
- Cartridge-2-Recycle

"Through our participation in Recycling Day and actively adopting recycling practices, Toshiba aims to be an environmentally responsible market leader in Singapore", said Mr. Shoji Yoshioka, Corporate Representative of Toshiba Asia Pacific Pte Ltd.
"Consumers are searching for brands and products that are committed to the environment, as they become more and more conscious about their impact on the planet they live on," added Mr. Hidemi Murata, Managing Director at Toshiba Singapore Pte Ltd. "Toshiba is developing and incorporating new technologies into its products that ultimately demonstrate its commitment to sustainability."

Toshiba Group, as a corporate citizen of planet Earth, practices environmental management that promotes harmony with the Earth, contributing to the creation of a richer lifestyle for society.

Environmentally-Friendly Products
At Toshiba Corporation, environmental efforts start from the product design phase. Before a product is being completed, each item is evaluated with stringent criteria such as resource conservation, energy savings, reduction in the use of toxic substances and end of life reuse and recycling. Toshiba products undergo a complex and precise process during manufacture, spanning from product design, procurement, to choice of state-of-the-art components in order to achieve products with efficient power consumption and long product life. By incorporating such environmental considerations during design and planning stage, Toshiba decisively helps to reduce any adverse environmental impact throughout the product's life cycle.

Green Procurement
Toshiba is making huge strides in the reduction of chemical substances and hazardous materials, which reflects increased efforts to reduce the environmental impacts of its products in cooperation with its suppliers.

A key element in Toshiba Group's efforts to create environmentally-conscious products (1ECPs) is the evaluation of the procurement of its products, parts and components, processed materials and raw materials. Toshiba has already put the 'precautionary principle' and 'substitution principle' into practice and replaces hazardous substances with alternatives, regardless if those hazardous substances are restricted by the law. Long before the RoHS2 Directive came into effect in the European Union, Toshiba Corporation adopted a policy of not using these restricted substances in products and furthermore has abolished the use of 15 substance groups, including ozone-depleting materials. These initiatives place Toshiba at the forefront of efforts to hasten the emergence of a sustainable society.

Expanding Recycling Efforts
Furthering its commitment to the environment, Toshiba Singapore Pte Ltd took this opportunity to announce its expanding recycling programs to include e-wastes like, used notebook PCs, notebook batteries and ink cartridges, with strategic drop-off locations in Singapore.

Together with its recycling partners, TES-AMM and Advanced Recycling, Toshiba Singapore has developed a process to implement these initiatives that will help to reduce the consumption of natural resources in the production of our products.

Notebook Battery-2-Recycle Program
3FACTS: In a one-year period, if the world' discarded batteries were stacked end-to-end, they would circle the Earth three times or more

Toshiba constantly seeks new innovations to improve the design and manufacturing of our products. Innovations that use lesser energy, have fewer parts and components that can be used in other forms after the original products have reached the end of its economic life (EOL).

Identifying and adopting sustainable environmental strategies have been a long term, ongoing commitment of Toshiba Group. Used notebook and its components like Lithium-ion battery are being collected and carefully recycled by TES-AMM, which at the same time, ensures intellectual property rights are protected.

Furthering the goal to increase recycling efforts across the nation, end-users have an option to either call 1800-TOSHIBA for a no-obligation notebook free collection or to simply do a drop-off at strategic locations nationwide, providing convenience for the end-users. The goal is to leverage consumer behavior by maximizing convenience and ultimately creating an efficient and effective recycling program.

Cartridge-2-Recycle Program
3FACT: Incinerating 10,000 tons of waste creates one job. Land filling it creates 6 jobs. Recycling it creates 36 jobs.

Sending waste to landfill is not a long-term solution as it just leaves the problem for the future generations to deal with. To ensure the quality of ECP's products, Toshiba Singapore does not refill the collected ink cartridges.

Advance Recycling will take in these cartridges, break them up, separate the residual ink and plastic component and recycle the various mixed plastics as end products, while incinerating residual ink particles. As the leading MFP manufacturer, Toshiba Group recognizes the importance and responsibility as a corporate citizen of planet Earth and works to find a careful balance between print needs of businesses today and preservation of our natural resources. Using the latest eco-innovations, Toshiba continues to reduce our environmental footprint through our manufacturing process, and to help our customers with Toshiba products and programs.

Expanding its recycling programs, working with other manufacturers that are committed to an environmentally sustainable future and dedicating more resources to green procurement and ECPs are just some of the many ways that Toshiba is reaffirming its commitment to the environment. In 2009 and the years to follow, Toshiba Singapore will continue to look for new ways to expand its environment efforts.

2 The Directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment 2002/95/EC made by the European Union is commonly referred to as the directive on Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS). The substances to restrict are lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ether.
