Toshiba Steam Turbine

TOKYO— Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today announced that the company has received an order to supply a steam turbine and generator (STG) for an ultra-supercritical coal-fired thermal power plant being constructed for Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company. The order is from Sumitomo Corporation, leader of the consortium*1 constructing the plant under an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with PLN. Toshiba will start delivery of the STG in January 2018.

Toshiba’s STG will be installed in an expansion of the Lontar Coal-Fired Thermal Power Plant in Java’s Banten Province. The plant has a current capacity of 945 megawatts (MW), and the addition of a 315MW STG for an ultra-supercritical coal-fired thermal power plant that offers much higher fuel efficiency than Lontar’s current STG, will increase total capacity to 1,260MW. The plant is scheduled to start commercial operation in 2019.

As the plant addition must make use of current transmission facilities, very high level efficiency is required, despite its relatively small size. Drawing on turbine technologies cultivated in projects for large plants, Toshiba has succeeded in meeting the customer’s requirements.

Mr. Takao Konishi, General Manager of Thermal & Hydro Power Systems & Services Div. Energy Systems & Solutions Company, Toshiba Corporation, mentions “It is great honor for Toshiba to supply ultra-super critical steam turbine and generator for the expansion of Lontar coal fired thermal power plant. Toshiba has been contributing to Indonesia’s electricity supply for over 40 years through various energy solutions. As Indonesia faces rapid urbanization, Toshiba will continue to respond effectively to the country’s growing energy demand.”

Indonesia’s economic growth is pushing up electricity demand, and in addition to the Lontar project there are plans to construct many more power plants. Toshiba has a positive track record in many Indonesian coal-fired plant projects, including Tanjung Jati B and Cirebon, and has contributed to Indonesia’s efforts to secure a stable power supply.

Toshiba will continue to actively participate in construction projects for high-efficiency thermal power plants and expand its power generation systems business at the global level.

1 The consortium comprises Sumitomo Corporation; Black & Veatch International Company, a U.S.-based engineering firm; and PT. Satyamitra Surya Perkasa (SSP), an Indonesian civil engineering company.
