Toshiba selected for METI’s offered business

October 25, 2013

Toshiba Corporation today announced it has will participate in a feasibility study on the development of a smart community in Bandung, Indonesia’s third largest city and home to over 2.4 million people. Sponsored by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) under it “FY2013 energy supply and demand easing type infrastructure system business” program, the study will investigate optimization of energy demand, especially for the transportation system, that does not impact on the performance of the existing power grid. Following the conclusion of a contract between METI and Toshiba, the feasibility study is scheduled to run from November 2013 to March 2014.

The feasibility study will investigate how smart grid technologies can contribute to the development of smart community infrastructure in a modernizing city. Toshiba will provide energy solutions for Bandung’s urban transportation system, which is now making a modal shift to modern transportation solutions, including light rail transit and electronic vehicles and buses. The study will also implement community energy management (CEMS) that will realize optimized energy management for targeted buildings and public facilities in the city. Toshiba will first study the prerequisites for realizing the solutions it will propose, including traffic volume and power supply condition.

This feasibility study was selected as part of a master plan for cooperation between industry, government and academia envisaged by the memorandum for cooperation in the “Jakarta Metropolitan Special Area and Investment Promotion Master Plan Study in Indonesia” that was signed by the Indonesian and Japanese governments in December 2010.
