In collaboration with National Parks of Singapore and Singapore Garden City fund "Plant-A-Tree" Program, we launched our 1st TEA Mangrove Tree-Planting Day at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve on 7 October 2010. 30 staff from various departments participated in this event, which is part of our CSR initiative to help protect the environment.
Mangrove trees are an important source of forestry products (such as firewood and charcoal) and fishery products (such as fish, prawn and crab). They also protect the coast from solar UV-B radiation, "greenhouse" effects, floods and coastal erosion.
After the briefing on safety issues and importance of mangrove ecosystem, we started clearing the muddy site of coastal trash which had been washed ashore during low tide. We picked up a total of 63kg of rubbish from the shore, which included non-biodegradable items such as styrofoam, plastic bottles, fishing nets, ropes and straws. After the area is cleared of rubbish, we successfully planted a total of 25 Avicennia alba mangrove tree saplings. TEA hopes that by proactively promoting environmental activities, we can do our part in protecting the
irreplaceable Earth for the benefit of future generations.
